Both. Outdoor sessions are GPS-verified with a route map, indoor or treadmill sessions are verified by motion-sensor cadence instead.
Everyone has their own buddy code in the app. Enter someone's code to send a request, they accept or decline, and once accepted you can start walking together. Only one buddy at a time, you can remove them whenever you like.
